WordPress Photo Directory & I: Weeks of February 11th, February 18th, February 25th (weeks 6, 7, 8)

This is the sixth (sometimes) weekly installment where I summarize my interactions with the WordPress Photo Directory throughout the week while attempting to fulfill my 366 photos in 2024 challenge.

Wow, February was a complete blur! 😅

Between some unexpected home ownership related things that came up and needed to be addressed, some seasonal illness going through the house, preparing to travel to and present at WordCamp Asia, and the upcoming WordPress 6.5 release, I did not have much spare time to keep up with submitting to the directory.

I’m sure I’ll take plenty of photos while in Taipei this week that I can upload next week to catch up. Anyway. Here’s where I left off:

  • Submitted: 54
  • Approved: 48
  • Pending: 0
  • Rejected: 7
  • Resubmitted: 0

My overall acceptance rate rose slightly to 89% to 85%.

Here’s my update from weeks 6, 7, and 8!

Photos used

I only was able to blog once in February, so I only utilized one photo.

Photos submitted

After a busy week to start February participating in the WordPress Photo Festival, the remainder of the month was very uneventful. I only submitted one photo. Thankfully, February is the shortest month of the year. So catching up shouldn’t be too difficult.

I did try to submit a second one. But was encountering some technical issues that I never figured out. I created a Meta ticket to investigate further.

Here’s my photo activity:

Photo #54 (approved)

During the holiday break this past December, my wife and I spent a few days in New Hampshire to celebrate her birthday. After skiing the first day, we did a few touristy things the second day. For lunch, we took the Gondola Skyride to the top of Loon Mountain. It was raining and not a great day, but I managed to snap this one from the lookout at the summit.

Thoughts & Observations

Here are some of the thoughts & observations I had throughout the week while interacting with the Photo Directory.

Random feature added to directory

I was surprised to receive a ping last week for a Meta ticket opened to add the ability to see a random photo from the directory! This was a wish list item that I had mentioned in a previous weekly update.

Location data is preserved

I had previously written that I wished location data was preserved for photos when uploaded. I realized that this is actually what happens already. The photos that I happened to look at when I assumed that data was “stripped out” had no location because I had to convert them from HEIC to JPG to upload.

There’s an open ticket for this, but I think the upload form should at least say that location data is preserved as a warning. There’s also a Meta ticket if you’d like to follow along. For now, just be mindful of the location data you’re providing.

Favorite Photos

Here are some of my favorite photos I discovered in the directory this past month. While I was not particularly active uploading photos, I still browsed photos for a brain break.

Summary

With the above included, this closes out the month of February with my running totals at:

  • Submitted: 54
  • Approved: 49
  • Pending: 0
  • Rejected: 7
  • Resubmitted: 0
