Jonathan Wold and Luke Carbis recently invited me to join them on the Crossword podcast for one of their Perspectives series episodes. The invitation was very timely. I was in the process of drafting a post inspired by one of their recent episodes when they reached out. So naturally, I was happy to join.
The post hadn’t been published when we recorded, so I was able to share what sparked the motivation to start writing and the overall premise behind it totally cold with no preparation. The discussion further gave me a second wind to get the post over the finish line, and I published it shortly after.
We covered a lot of ground! After starting out with the premise of my post, when it’s appropriate to offer criticism in open source projects, we moved on to discussing the concept of active versus passive contribution, how to the appropriate balance between those two groups, the importance of being prepared when new contributors show up, the nuance between a do-ocracy and a meritocracy and how they overlap, and tradeoffs and challenges of having two code bases maintained in two different locations (Trac and GitHub).
It was a genuinely fun conversation, and I’m grateful to Jonathan and Luke for having me on.
